If we fall for the crowd pleasing “gospel” of “God loves you and sin isn’t a big deal” then we have rejected the cross and replaced it with a self-supplied pat on the back.
If we change the gospel so more people will accept it then we have merely affirmed people who are actually rejecting the gospel and simply told them that the true gospel of Christ was wrong all along.
